A pillow fight is a common game mostly played by young children (but also by teens and adults) in which they engage in mock physical conflict, using pillows as weapons.
Many times pillow fights occur during children's sleepovers. Since pillows are often soft, injuries rarely occur. The heft of a pillow can still knock a young person off balance, especially on a soft surface such as a bed, which is a common venue. A useful technique in a pillow fight is to bundle the nibs.[clarification needed] In earlier eras, pillows would often break, shedding feathers throughout a room. Modern pillows tend to be stronger and are often filled with a solid block of artificial filling, so breakage occurs far less frequently.
Pillow fighting became part of flash mob culture with pillow fight flash mobs popping up in cities around the world.
Women wrestlers, known Divas in World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) engage in pillow fights as a type of match, most often booked as a Lingerie Pillow Fight, in which the women "compete" in lingerie. Little or no actual wrestling takes place.
In January 2007, Reuters reported that a Pillow Fight League was operating in bars in Toronto.Pre-selected female "fighters" with stage personalities are paid small amounts to stage regular, unscripted fights. The rules call for "no lewd behavior, and moves such as leg drops or tickling or submission holds are allowed as long as a pillow is used".
The Johannesburg-based University of the Witswatersrand's Silly Buggers Society has held an annual Pillow Fight at the East Campus' Library Lawns since 2007.
Students at Columbia University have incorporated a Spring Pillow Fight into the spring semester version of their bi-annual primal scream tradition. Students run into the center of campus screaming and pillow fighting on midnight of the Sunday of finals week as a way to relieve stress.
At the conclusion of the spring semester at the University of Rochester an orchestrated pillow fight is held on the main Eastman quad with one team attacking and another defending Rush Rhees Library.
The Guinness World Record for the largest pillow fight was set on November 14, 2008, at Butlins in Minehead, Somerset, England, headlined by former X Factor singer Chico Slimani. The previous record was exceeded by 58 people, with 3,706 people all fighting at once, a spokesman for the Guinness Book of Records said. The record was once again broken on October 27, 2013, by the attendees of a Dada Life concert in Chicago, with "maybe four-and-a-half-thousand pillows" and 3,813 participants
Hide-and-seek or hide-and-go-seek is a children's game in which a number of players conceal themselves in the environment, to be found by one or more seekers. The game is played by one player chosen at random (designated as being "it") counting to a predetermined number while the other players hide. After reaching the number, the player who is "it" attempts to locate all concealed players. The game is an example of an oral tradition, as it is commonly passed down by children to younger children.
The game can end in one of several ways depending on the geographical location in which the players learned about the game originally, and other cultural factors as well. In the most common variation of the game, the player chosen as "it" locates all players, the player found last is the winner and is chosen to be it in the next game. In other versions, after the first player is caught or if no other players can be found over a period of time, "it" calls out "Olly olly oxen free" (or "all outs, all in free" or many other variations) to signal the other hiders to return to base for the next round. Some versions in eastern Massachusetts, Base is referred to as "Ghouls" with players trying to reach Ghouls safely without being caught. When reaching Ghouls, players would call out "My Ghouls 1,2,3." In yet another version, when players are caught, they help the "it" seek out others.
Different versions of the game are played around the world, under a variety of names. One derivative game is called "Sardines", in which only one person hides and the others must find them, hiding with them when they do so. The hiding places become progressively more cramped, like sardines in a tin. The last person to find the hiding group is the loser. A. M. Burrage calls this version of the game 'Smee' in his 1931 ghost story of the same name.
In one variant, once all hiders have been located, the game then becomes a game of tag where the "it" chases after all the other players and the first person tagged becomes the "it".
In another variant reserved for only the truly advanced children's game participants, all players hiding may move from one location to another to avoid being caught. To begin this version, the player being designated as being "it" must first count to 20 and then sing their ABCs before seeking out the hiding players.
A snowball fight is a physical game in which balls of snow are thrown with the intention of hitting somebody else. The game is similar to dodgeball in its major factors, though typically less organized. This activity is primarily played during months when there is sufficient snowfall.
Today, the activity is notable for its prominence in the western world. Modern snowball fights tend to have very loose official regulation or constant properties, and so can only loosely be referred to as games. However, a common snowball fight played for fun will often have these characteristics:
There is crude formation of "teams", usually two groups of opponents throwing at each other.
Those in a fight often do not behave malevolently; a target is usually not viciously assaulted by snowballs.
There is minimal physical contact, aside from perhaps wrestling.
In contrast to other forms of fighting, there is usually no intention of bodily harm.
Construction and use of snow forts is usually permitted.
Wallball is a type of school yard game similar to butts up, aces-kings-queens, American handball and Chinese handball. The sport was played by a few schools in the San Francisco Bay Area and New York City, then began gaining much popularity, resulting in a popular world wide sport. Wallball is now played globally with the international federation, Wall Ball International, promoting the game. The game requires the ball to be hit to the floor before hitting the wall, but in other respects is similar to squash. It can be played as a singles, doubles or elimination game.
Wallball is derived from many New York City street games played by young people, often involving the Spalding hi-bounce balls created in 1949.
